1. They're gonna make my Rx today. Really, y'all. It's going to happen. LOL This is after four days of multiple phone calls to both the doctor and the pharmacy. I am so lucky to have a flexible job that allows me the time I have found it necessary to devote to begging medical professionals to help me. Is there anything more humiliating and time consuming than having weird medical problems in the US?

To See When Shown
Good Omens
Aziraphale/Crowley

[personal profile] misbegotten has such a good handle on the character voices; reading her dialogue is like reading the book or watching the show. Very hot and very sweet which is exactly what I'm looking for when I read this in this fandom.

Stargate Atlantis
McShep, McKeller
This is a delightful story that feels like it was written during the height of the fandom; it is exactly the dynamic I want out of my McShep. It feels right and true, and there's such perfect dialogue. Keller is treated very well; I can't stand slash that bashes her, and [personal profile] esteefee acknowledges how important she is to Rodney and doesn't demonize her to make the slash work. This really hits the spot.

Good Omens
Aziraphale/Crowley
I really like the way [personal profile] misbegotten writes these two; the voices are impeccable, and this has just the right amount of humor alongside tugs on the heartstrings. I think the tag idiots in love says it all.

1. We have eaten so well the last few days. A couple days ago, we had roasted broccoli and roasted butternut squash with baked chicken thighs and sauteed dandelion greens and vidalia onions. Last night we made a ham. Josh and I try to do a fair amount of cooking large cuts of meat like Boston butt or a beef roast and getting multiple meals out of it. A 12 lb ham cost $18, and we'll get at least five meals out of it. We crusted the ham with brown sugar, and Josh made dressing to go with it. OMG, it was so freaking good.

Good Omens Episode 3 )
lunabee34: (gay agenda by jjjean65)
Josh and I watched Mission Impossible 2 tonight. It was . . . not good. The main issue is pacing. If you strip out all the long stretches of John Woo slow-mo and edit out a little dialogue, it could be a perfectly solid bottom B action movie. But as is, not so much.

Emma has gone off to camp. Fiona hasn't quite realized she's missing yet; she asked for her a few times today, but didn't dwell on her absence. Hopefully she won't be morose tomorrow.

I'm still reading Trigger Warnings, about to start Jane Eyre, and looking forward to Naomi Novik's Uprooted. We've never read any of her published works, but Josh just finished Uprooted and said it reminds him of Patrick Rothfuss and Kelly Link. So much of fandom has what is to me an inexplicable hateboner for Rothfuss but we only have loveboners in this house for Rothfuss, so high praise indeed.

Occam's Razor by [insanejournal.com profile] joanwilder; HP; Harry/Draco, Harry/Severus; long; Adult
This is an extremely interesting fic in which Harry and Draco find Snape's portrait and develop a relationship with the slain potion's master. Very cool use of canonical magic and a nice look at wizarding portraits and how they function. Also hot.

Memorium by Aesop; HP; gen; long
Wow. This is one of those fantastic stories that examine a part of canon we take for granted--of course, Muggles are Obliviated when they come in contact with the wizarding world, both for their protection and the safety of magic users. What if that isn't true, though. What if in addition to being grossly unethical, Obliviation is also highly dangerous? Can't recommend this one highly enough.

Repetition is a Form of Change by [archiveofourown.org profile] DoctorSyntax; HP; Percy/Oliver, Percy/Neville; medium

Close Enough by Helenish; HP; Harry/Ron; Adult; long
Nobody writes HP like Helenish. I wish Helenish wrote HP all the time. There is so very little Harry/Ron out there (which shocked me to my very bones when I first started dipping my toes in the HP waters), and this is such a fine example of how amazing that pairing can be. This is set after the War and features a relatively fucked up Harry and clueless Ron.

If You're Quick, For a Kick, You Can Pick Up a Christening by [personal profile] executrix; Firefly; Mal/Simon; medium
This is wedding fic as only Exec could write it, laugh out loud funny and deeply sweet. Wash shrugged. “Good things get better, bad get worse. Wait, I think I meant that in reverse. If you have problems, it doesn’t take them away. And there are special separate problems. There was that whole you could set your watch by Mal getting hysterical thing, but I guess he can’t make a thing out of it considering that he’s marrying you. I guess if you do make an honest man out of him, that could be a problem, unless you have some smart vocational ideas?” Simon shook his head. “I can recommend the married state heartily,” Wash said. “I mean, when you first came here, I didn’t think of you as someone I’d want to spend the rest of my life with, but then, I’m not the one who has to. Also, when you’re married, they can’t make you testify against your…against the person you’re married to.”

Froodian Slip by [personal profile] executrix; Firefly/Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy XOVER; short
I've never read Hitchhiker's Guide, and this fic makes me wish I had because I know this story would be even more awesome. Exec has a gift for character voices and this fic is no exception. If you want some wry humor, this is the fic for you.

in a shadowed forest by [livejournal.com profile] possibly_thrice; Good Omens; long; PG-13; pairings not listed by the reccer
Who wants to read the best Good Omens fic of ever? You do! P3 is probably the writer in fandom I am most jealous of. Everything she writes is absolutely pitch perfect in every way. The dialogue is always spot on; you can hear the characters speaking their lines as you read. The language is always gorgeous--beautiful imagery and turns of phrase, lovely detail, description so fine that you are immediately placed in the setting. I cannot think of another writer in fandom who so consistently turns out writing for which I can think of no descriptor but perfect. So this is what happens on the day the world ends, and it is by turns hilarious, haunting, cutting, heartbreaking, and full of wonder. Much like the story on which it is based. I feel like the runner ought to be sliding into home here, but I just want to reiterate how much I love P3's writing. From Discworld to Good Omens to Star Trek 2009, everything she writes is fascinating and interesting and achingly, achingly beautiful.

Syndicated Sci-Fi Show by [livejournal.com profile] cluadiapriscus; SG-1/SPN XOVER; Gen; PG; long
In the midst of "Changing Channels," the brothers Winchester find themselves on another planet with SG-1. This is really funny (and at times poignant). Because Sam and Dean think this is just another crappy and fake TV show they've fallen into, they can provide interesting commentary on the plotholes and general cheesiness our beloved show sometimes devolves into.

'Verse War Z Day 1: Firefly and 'Verse War Z Day 2: Sleeping Beauty by [livejournal.com profile] lyrstzha; Multifandom project
Lyr is doing this thing where she's bringing the zombie apocalypse down on all her fandoms, and it is glorious. The Sleeping Beauty one in particular is very finely done; I love Lyr's wry humor and the way she shows that what begins in even the deepest of love can be twisted and perverted to other ends.

The Harry Potter kids try to talk with American accents
Tom Felton is the best at it, followed by Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe. Poor Emma Watson can't do an American accent to save her life LOL.

Sympathetic Magic by shedoc; Harry Potter; Ron/Harry; Adult; Big Bang length; warnings for child abuse (not sexual in nature); mpreg by the end
So, this story starts with the Dursleys abusing (and nearly killing Harry as a result) just the way Xander's daddy taught them, but even if that's not your cuppa, I think there's a lot to enjoy in this story. Ron/Harry is the pairing that makes the most sense to me based on canon; unlike Harry/Snape or Harry/Draco, the two of them actually *like* each other and would die for each other. It's a great sadness of mine that so little of this pairing exists, and I really like the way Ron and Harry go from being friends to lovers in this story. It may get a little too "their magical love is special beyond all others" for some people's tastes by the end, but I was in just the right mood for it.

Backwards by Drake of Dross; Harry Potter; Harry/Hermione; mpreg; shortish
I absolutely love this story. Hermione accidentally gets Harry pregnant. This is a serious look at how that might change all their lives. Can I tell you how much I adore that they don't instantly decide that marriage is the answer?

Uncertain Plans by Sunny de Luca; Neville/Charlie; mpreg; medium length
This is a story I desperately wish had a sequel but from what I can tell, alas, does not. It begins en medias res with a pregnant Neville who has no idea how to tell Charlie that their summer liason has had unintended results. It's the kind of fic I long for--where Neville is keeping the pregnancy secret and everything is so confusing and uncertain, and when Charlie finds out, he's well aware that his parents will be livid and that this will be a very difficult change in their lives. I was all hormonal when I read this, so I got to drift along on a lovely little crying jag and feel sorry for poor Neville. Hit an emotional kink for me, hard.

Undone Wars by esama; Harry Potter/SGA XOVER; mostly gen but Ronon/Harry at the end; long
I love this story so much. I don't want to say much about it because I don't want to give away any of the plot points. During his time as a Runner, Ronon comes across Harry, and they travel together. One of the things I adore about this story is Ronon's concern over how dangerous it is for magicians to have to rely on wands and what he and Harry do to combat that. This is first and foremost a story about friendship and family, and I love love love it.

Charm City by [livejournal.com profile] hth_the_first; Homicide/SPN XOVER; medium length; Sam/Tim; Adult
I absolutely adore this meshing of these two worlds. Basically nothing happens in this story--Sam meets Tim and wants him and has him. It's languid and a bit dreamy with wonderful character insights.

Just about every day, I take a look around lj and think, "I get to hang around these people for free? Wow." I am surrounded by some of the smartest, funniest, most clever people--and let me not forget, kindest and most generous while I'm at it. Sometimes it boggles my mind that so many exceptionally good writers are just one mouse click away from me at all times. Y'all make me feel lucky and grateful. Here's what a handful of you have been up to lately.

Famous Brown Raincoat by [livejournal.com profile] executrix; Firefly; Mal/Zoe; Wash/Zoe; PG-13
Among executrix's many gifts is the ability to tell a hell of a backstory. I love this picture of Zoe and Mal following the war, of the minutiae of the lives of two people putting themselves back together. I love Zoe's voice here--how plainspoken and unapologetic she is even as she's apologizing. And mostly I love that River gets to save them all this time.

Let's Give 'Em Something to Talk About by [livejournal.com profile] ariadne83; SG-1; Cam/Sam but mostly gen; PG-13
Ariadne is one of the most thoughtful and insightful writers I've ever read. Her understanding of character motivation is unparalleled, and she has a way of spooling out tiny plot points in canon to the far-reaching consequences that escape me sometimes as a viewer. This is the story of how Cam and Sam's marriage fails, and they learn to be friends. The voices are amazing here (Lorne in particular brings a grin to my face), and the end is pretty much the definition of perfect.

In Imitation of Apples by [livejournal.com profile] possibly_thrice; Good Omens/Trek Reboot XOVER; Chekov-centric gen; PG
P3 is a genius, pure and simple. To call her a wordsmith somehow reduces the magic she makes to mere craft, and believe me, y'all--the way she puts words together goes far beyond the limitations of craft. I think she's the most evocative, sensual writer I've ever read anywhere, not just fandom. Her fic just begs to be read aloud (by Alan Rickman LOL). Sometimes I get chillbumps when I read her work; I *always* get jealous. In this fic, Chekov meets Azriphale and Crowley and it is GLORIOUS!

Apocalypses I Have Known by [livejournal.com profile] lyrstzha; Non-fiction
I love Lyr's stories. I love the way she sees the Buffyverse, the way she writes the ensemble cast of Firefly, the way she lets me imagine Dean interacting with the world of Babylon 5, but I never love her writing so much as when she's writing about herself. This piece is, in a word, exquisite.

Absumption by [livejournal.com profile] drsquidlove; Voyager; Paris/Janeway; Adult
This fic does not fit the category of lately, but thanks to the timelessness of the internet, it's as new to me as if it was written yesterday. I was introduced to the Doctor through hir Buffy fic (specifically Giles/Xander), and I was struck by hir skill with characterization and plotting. The Doctor tells a damn good story. So when I discovered that the Doc had written Voyager fic, I was pretty much beside myself with joy. This is a riff on the episode "Timeless," and it is just as angsty and heartrending as you might imagine. The depiction of grief and shock in the wake of the accident is particularly fine.
lunabee34: (hp: pimp by mas_mervin)
I bookmarked all of these last night before the reveal--that totally counts as under the wire, right? Sadly, I did not make it all the way through the archive before the reveal--I've still got Buffy, Firefly, and SPN to read.

Effable by Beth H; Gen; PG
After all that's happened, Aziraphale finds that his definition of family has expanded. The tone of this piece is so in keeping with the spirit of the novel and is really a joy to read.

Comfort and Joy by Penknife; A/C; PG
Aziraphale and Crowley go Christmas shopping. Such a lovely slice of friendship between these two, how working at cross purposes somehow always manages to create a neutral space for them to occupy. And footnotes! Yay!

Eight Nights by Daegaer; Gen; PG
Aziraphale tricks Crowley into celebrating Hanakkuh. *adores* Such a perfect, sweet little story.

The Probability of Ducks by Graycastle; Gen; Adult
This is a kicker y'all. One of those magnificent fics that strings you along on the amusing and the absurd and then gut punches you in the last paragraph. Brilliant, disturbing, funny. Go read. *shoo*

A Hole in the Hedge by Vyola; Pepper/Adam; Adult
This is completely brilliant; it's a very clever weaving of several possible timelines that's ultimately very disturbing. This is GO with the humor stripped away--a raw intensity and despair that I guarantee you will find an interesting read.

Revisited and Riding Out by Patrick Phelan; Gen; PG
Oh, the Them. How I love the Them, especially Pepper. This so completely captures her character (with much less alliteration than I've used here LOL).
