I think the language in this piece is really lovely, very indicative of lives predicated on despair and hunger and want that are punctuated by rare but intense joy. The last bit of this will kick the air out of your lungs. Warning: this fic has that wonky thing with quotation marks where they're turned into bizzaro symbols that can make it difficult to read, but it's worth slogging through, I promise. There's actually not a whole lot of dialogue.
