1.
gloss linked me to this essay about the Southern Reach Trilogy and this conversation between its author and Jeff Vandermeer, and I just now got around to reading them. They are both uniformly excellent, and I would recommend anyone who loved the trilogy read them.
2. We are almost done with Lucifer.
Episode 6
I love Lucifer and Dan being jealous of the DJ and sharing that.
I think Jed giving terrible advice about his relationship with Chloe is really funny.
I love the meta nod to what often happens in shows where couples poise on the edge of getting together in Jed's remark about unresolved sexual tension.
Maze dressing/acting like Ella is hysterical. That actor is so damn good. I also really like Maze telling Ella that she deserves more than just a jerk.
I love the ludicrous way all four women dress up in rave clothes and go on a sting. Linda's pigtails are boss.
Charlie digging the devil face may be my favorite part of this whole show. And Lucifer being willing to play devil face with his nephew for, presumably, hours definitely shows how much he's grown over the course of the show.
I am very upset by where I think this is going with Dan. He just got his Dan-ness back. He's happy again and getting along with everyone. I don't want Dan to be the bad guy. :(
Episode 7
The mojo thing is funny, but ultimately unimportant I think. It'll boil down to Lucifer just wanting to tell her truth rather than being compelled to, I suspect. Love Linda testing whether she has the mojo.
Love that Ella gives a shoutout to Deckerstar.
Maze's sharp and dull rocks! *dies* Poor bb!Maze.
Okay, I am still upset with where this is going with Dan, but I am less upset now that they gave some complexity to it. He is worried that he can't be redeemed, that he's going to hell; every now and again, the show reminds us that Dan started out as a dirty cop, that he did terrible things, and I like that. I think his emotional struggle here is well done, and it breaks my heart. I just hope Chloe and Lucifer forgive him when they realize Michael is manipulating him.
Maze breaks my heart, too. She wants a soul, and I don't know if she needs one or not, but I hope she finds someone to love her.
I am suspicious of reporter dude. Chloe indicated that the serial killer mystery is not yet solved, so I think the dude they caught was a puppet for someone else, and my spidey senses tell me it's Ella's new boyfriend.
One more episode to go! Is that the end of the show, or is more expected?

Date: 2020-11-05 04:04 pm (UTC)Kevin Alejandro has gotten some of the meatiest acting on this show with his arc, and you'd think he was just going to be this background guy who'd be an obstacle to Chloe and Lucifer, but, no, he's got a full story and an arc of his own. I thought Dan was there to be the butt of every joke, but actually, damn, no, Kevin Alejandro is a solid actor and pretty fucking amazing. (Anyone who can keep up with Tricia Helfer has to be; to be fair, she's pretty damn impressive and I have yet to see a role she can't handle.) I think I first saw him playing some weird kid on XF and he's gotten so much better since then.
I hope that, now that he's in on the truth, he gets to play Michael for a fool, because, damn, that's worth it in the end for all the years of him not knowing and having to find out like that.
And yes, there's more coming - the back half of season five, plus the absolute last of it, season six, which. I guess Lucifer has done good for Netflix, and we really needed this to wrap up the show in something resembling a good, solid story.
But all the actors on this show are solid and every single one of them has a great arc, which is one of the reasons I love this show. The characters are realistic and you see everyone's lives, they're not just all there to prop up Chloe and Lucifer. Not every show manages that.
(Randomly using Teyla in blue light icon because she's really damn pretty in it.)

Date: 2020-11-06 12:48 pm (UTC)I love Maze/Eve, hard. I would be thrilled for her to come back. I have always been a fan of Maze/Linda, and I'd be happy for that to happen, too; after that episode where Maze comes back to save Linda, it seemed logical for that to follow. The longer the show goes without showing any sign that Linda is attracted to Maze, though, the less likely I think it would be. I also don't want her to realize that being a friend is her calling. I want her to have a good relationship. But I also kinda don't want them to introduce some rando we've never met, you know? So I am down for Eve coming back.
I first saw Kevin Alejandro on True Blood, so I knew going into Lucifer that he was an excellent actor; what I didn't know is how great he is at comedy. True Blood did not give him much opportunity to stretch those wings. LOL I absolutely love your idea of Dan playing Michael. Love it. I hope that's what happens.
I have this feeling that Ella's new boyfriend is bad news, but if he is, then what's the message? That she should have kept dating jerks? LOL

Date: 2020-11-06 08:38 pm (UTC)So. I have not seen True Blood because it was on a pay network when it started out and I think it might be on Amazon Prime now, and I just never got around to it, but should I? I feel like I should. It's right the hell in my wheelhouse and I read a bunch of books in that series (before I gave up because I couldn't keep track anymore). Should I go for it? Tell me what you think, you've known me so long and we have such similar tastes, I trust your advice.

Date: 2020-11-07 06:02 pm (UTC)IMHO, True Blood is one of those rare shows that transcends the books. It takes the world building (and most of the first book although not all) and then spins out into its own, better thing. The acting is really, really good. It's funny and sexy and suspenseful. I don't like every single plot point, but I do like where most of the characters end up by the finale, and it's just a damn fun ride.
