I’m going to start with the tail end of episode 34 when Zhao Yunlan gets sent back in time.
I wish the show did a better job of demonstrating the passage of time; we are clearly supposed to believe that Zhao Yunlan spent awhile in the past (maybe months, but definitely weeks), but the way it’s shot makes it seem like he spent a day there.
Emma was right! Zhao Yunlan is Kun Lun. :)
I love this harmonious past with all three peoples coexisting peacefully and working together; I really hope that a return to that state will happen at the end of the show.
I am intrigued that the two leaders in the past know who Zhao Yunlan is and are ready for him to take over Kun Lun’s identity.
I’m a little confused about the details of what destroyed the Dixingian underground living space. So the Dixing and Yashou people come to earth in a spaceship and everyone gets along with the humans. The Dixingians live underground, but then a meteor crashes into the earth and destroys their domain? And this starts some unrest and a rebellion? Is that right?
Da Qing touches a hallow. It looks like his memory issues stem back from that moment (and possibly also his longevity).
Wow, is Zhao Yunlan flirting madly and openly. LOL That lecherous grin when he takes off the mask is something else. And, of course, he introduces candy to the ancient world. Hee.
Shen Wei is so young and open. He’s not melancholy or reserved at all. It almost hurts to see him that way. I love his admission that he wears the mask to hide that he’s afraid.
“The life that I owe you, I will return to you.” My heart, my heart.
Episode 35
I’m not exactly sure what’s going on with Zhao Yunlan modifying Shen Wei’s name; it sounds like he’s changing the pronunciation slightly so that it doesn’t sound like the way modern people answer the phone. I think. LOL
We get some Shen Wei back story but not enough. His parents died when he was a child. Shen Wei says he’s lonely and he has no friends. *sniffle* We know that his brother Ye Zun hates him and wants to kill him but not why. Ye Zun thinks Shen Wei abandoned him, but Shen Wei apparently thought Ye Zun was dead. I am going to be disappointed if we don’t get a clearer picture of what went wrong between the two brothers because at this point, Ye Zun’s enmity doesn’t make much sense.
The scene where Shen Wei says that he wants more from his life than his role as the Black Cloaked Envoy is interesting. Zhao Yunlan interrupts him and says that Shen Wei is the kind of person who will always fight for his conscience, but I’m really curious about what else young Shen Wei wants to be and do. I also wonder how much of that aspect of his personality is created in response to what Zhao Yunlan believes about him. Later, in one of my favorite lines, Zhao Yunlan tells Shen Wei that he’s human, not a knife, so I think he gets at least a little that Shen Wei has always felt reduced to a weapon and wants him to know that he sees him as more than that merely that role.
Ye Zun is initially a subordinate. He has no power and is abused by the leader of the rebels who is able to mind control people. His power finally manifests as he’s being killed (I feel like power manifestation is really similar to what happens in the X-Men when extremity awakens powers ala Deadpool) and turns his hair gray.
OMG, he picks up the lollipop wrapper! That’s the necklace, right? Oh, my heart.
Da Qing loves Zhao Yunlan so much that he’s willing for Zhao Yunlan to be his master, but Zhao Yunlan makes Da Qing his own master instead. That’s really nicely done.
Zhao Yunlan leaves in the wormhole and meets Shen Wei inside. “I looked for you for 10,000 years.” *swoons* It’s a good line, but it’s not really true, is it? LOL I love that the wormhole functions as a movie theater so they can watch the rest of the past unfold.
Ye Zun gets caught in the vortex and Shen Wei tries to help him but can’t. Ye Zun falls into the earth and I guess that creates the pillar that imprisons him. Shen Wei falls into the crack deliberately; I think he is attempting to commit suicide :( but he wakes up one day 10,000 years later to a very different world.
Dragon City has been built on top of the meteorite impact. The Hallows have scattered, people are fleeing from Dixing to the surface, and Dixing is a mess. This really clears up one of my main issues with the show. I couldn’t understand Dixing being such a horrible place under Shen Wei’s influence, but he hasn’t been around. He’s only been awake since the beginning of the SID, so less than twenty years? About 20 years? He’s not responsible for the problems in Dixing which is a relief to me.
Ye Zun pretends to be Shen Wei to incite the Dixingians to war. All sorts of awesome fic potential inherent in the brothers looking exactly alike.
