Man, I love this show. Last season was so strong, especially the finale, and this opener promises another really strong season.

1. Arya is so awesome. There goes the entire Frey line, completely wiped off the map. I have a vision of all those women banding together and becoming a badass tribe of warriors now that the men in their lives are gone. I liked her scene with the Lannister soldiers; I can't decide if she was going to kill them and then decided not to because they're just regular folks or if she's still going to kill them but be sad about it because they're regular folks. Regardless, it was a good scene. I hope she's not headed to King's Landing yet, though. I'm ready for her to reunite with Jon, Sansa, and Bran (who is surely headed to Winterfell).

2. [livejournal.com profile] decynthus gave me a fridge magnet that says, "Make Westeros great again. Lyanna Mormont for President." LOL Please, please let her survive to the end! I'd be satisfied if she's the one on the Iron Throne when it's all said and done. That trifecta of glances between Sansa, Brienne, and Davos when Lyanna said that the girls would indeed be trained was so lovely and bittersweet; I could see how much Davos misses Shireen in that glance.

3. Cersei is such a dumbass. Euron Greyjoy is a terrible ally. At least she didn't accept his proposal of marriage outright. I also love that Jaime's feelings for her are steadily crumbling into nothing. I have a feeling that Arya's revenge on Cersei may be stolen by her brother. I suspect Jaime will be the one to kill her; we know he's deposed a mad king before.

4. Stalwart Sam, may we never have to watch a montage of your duties again. Bleck! But by next episode Jon will have reason to head to Dragonstone, hopefully with the knowledge that he's Dany's nephew to bolster his request to mine her mountain of dragon glass.

5. Brienne training Podrick! Yay! I sincerely hope Pod survives the show as well.

6. Ser Jorah is alive in Old Town! Yay! I foresee nothing but a sacrificial death for him, poor guy.

7. I hope Arya and Sandor reunite at some point. His transformation from the beginning of the series has been so dramatic. His anger and pain at the death of the family he robbed was hard to watch. At least Beric Dondarrion is still human enough to appreciate that. I saw someone call him a fire wight, and I like that. Wights of ice and fire.

8. Sansa. Wow. Talk about dramatic transformations. She has gone from a true child, more truly a child than any other character on the show--naive with a head full of fairy tales--to a strong woman who's learned from those who victimized her. I love that she straight up tells Jon that she learned a great deal from Cersei. I also hope that Jon understands that not listening to his mom was one of the biggest mistakes Robb made. Listening to the women around him is something a good king needs to do. And Sansa's right, Jon's a good king in a way Robb never was. Jon won't get stars in his eyes like Robb did. Jon isn't out for glory or fame, he's not in love, and while he's Ned Stark's kid through and through, he's flexible in a way that Ned never could learn to be. The decision he makes to allow the traitors to keep their lands isn't a bad one; how can you hold a ten year old responsible for something her parents did. But Sansa also had a point, and he's going to have to listen to her and take her counsel just like she's going to have to learn that she can't press the point publicly. I just want a good working relationship between them. Also, Sansa smacking down Littlefinger was awesome. "No need to seize the last word, Lord Baelish. I'll assume it was something clever." Bazinga!

9. Dany coming home was wonderfully done. I like that it was quiet, nearly silent, and understated. Her reclamation of her ancestral home was very emotional as a result.

Can't wait for next week!

I don't watch the show, but I first read the books back in 2005. It's so delightful to read reactions/reviews to the show and learn how the story ends. (I have zero confidence the books will ever be finished, at this point...)

Yeah, everything I've heard about the show makes it sound really good, without Grrm's tendency to add way more characters/story arcs than the narrative can support. I might watch the whole thing when it's over, but no time to catch up before it ends, so...reading spoiler posts with great glee is where it's at. :DDD
