As I was writing that Ben/Xander story for the latest round of [livejournal.com profile] maleslashminis, I got to wondering what other Ben-centric stories are out there. Which, naturally, led me to want to read fic from the perspective of (or that's largely about) minor and secondary characters in the Buffyverse.

So help a girl out, y'all. If you've got a link to some Buffyverse fic that fits that description, lay it on me. I want Ford and Penn and Chanterelle and the Buffybot and Janice and Fred's parents and Quentin Travers and Principal Snyder OMG! (A couple examples of the kinds of fics I'm thinking about (links to follow in rec post) are [livejournal.com profile] alixtii's Lydia Chalmers fic and the Jonathan/Andrew Rosencrantz and Guildenstern fic.)

I want to make a recs post out of this, so comment with the raw link iffen you please for easier c&p.

A related question: how do you tag a fic if it's Main Character/Minor Canon Character? I'm writing Kaylee/That Would Be Telling and am not sure if anybody will even remember who the guy is--he's the kind of person whose name you have to look up.

I suspect, however, that although B7 has lots of Minionfics, BtVS writers would be discouraged by the oft-expressed fannish opinion, "I want to read about the Core Scoobies, not some guy who had two lines in one ep!"

Do you mean how do you tag for like AO3? I think you can just write character/character, unless you want the pairing to be a secret and then I'd put Kaylee/Surprise or something like that.

(Is it Atherton Wing? *g*)

I think to a certain extent, you're right. I don't know that the Buffyverse has an overabundance of fic that isn't about core cast members. Unlike, say, SGA where Parrish (after less than two minutes of screen time total) gets tons and tons and tons of fic written about him.

I was thinking for the header on my DW post.

It is not Atherton Wing (...who I seem to have taken out of rotation because he and Mal are so perfect for each other, for certain specialized values of "perfect"...) although it *is* someone that I thought about writing with Mal.

I actually really like Kaylee/Fess Higgins, they have a similar refreshing innocence.

And somebody, maybe even you, wrote some amusing Kaylee/Bester that I really liked. Hmmmmm, somebody you thought of pairing with Mal. It can't be Badger or Mr. Universe; they're too well known. Ooooh, the anticipation.

I think for the header, you could just put the guy's name. I am so curious now.

Is The Immortal (pre-comics) considered BtVS or AtS?
THE BOYS IN QUESTION FADE AWAY

"That was bloody brilliant," Spike said, surrounded by a cloud of cigarette smoke. He tapped the ashes into the palm of his hand, the ashtray being already SRO. "Oh, I'm forgettin' me manners. Want a coffin nail?"

"No," The Immortal said. "I do not smoke aftair intaircourse, except in ze sense of ze more vulnerairable of my partners succumbing to ze effulgence of mon ineffability."

"Oi!" Spike said. "So that's where those come from!" (He'd seen t-shirts reading "I got effed by the Ineffable and all I got was this lousy t-shirt," backed with a drawing of the Colosseum.)

The Immortal nodded, his long amber tresses, the stuff of a million embossed paperback covers, rippling.

"Y'know, you sound just like the geezer in those I Need a Bloke books," Spike said. "Not that I'd know…"

The Immortal shrugged Gallicly. "Mais oui, mon petit Grand Mal. And all ze were-beasts as well. When I finish wiz her, she 'ave ze feet of roman a clef. Do you wish that I transform for you? Once you try javelina, you nevair go back."

"No, ta, and speakin' of goin' back…" Spike said, sitting up and brushing ash off his chest. "I'd best get the head—the one in the bowlin' ball bag—and go back to Hell-lay, stave off a gang war. And tell 'em about Angel…" for a moment, his eyes misted. "Not such a crap shag, finally. He'd improved a lot since that one time…"

"Yes, yes," The Immortal said. "A true champion."

At first, Spike had believed that Angel's triple lutz out of bed onto a cleverly concealed stake was a tragic copulation-related accident, of the type that might happen to Wesley. That happens more often than people think, even with the exercise of due care.

But then he realized that Angel, foreseeing the inevitability of perfect happiness after, as it were, taking the team, resolved to take one for the team.

"Were you nevair curious?" The Immortal asked. "For a century, I suborn and corrupt your women—yes, yes, I say zat as if it were a bad thing— are zey not just Ze Conduit?" And nevair you ask, why does he speak to ze minkey when ze organ grindair is in ze room?

"Or ze groom—the groom," Spike said. "Wi' time off for good conduit—naaah, o'course not. They were special, all of them. I mean, who wouldn't want Buffy? 'Er hair, 'er eyes, 'er left hook, 'er bad jokes…"

"Bad jokes? Surely zis is ze pot calling ze cauldron Sirius," The Immortal said. {{Mmmm! Sirius!}} he thought.

"I miss 'er," Spike said. "Best thing that ever happened to me, well, except for bein' vamped and getting to torture and kill without remorse." He straightened the lapels of his brand-new leather coat, then gazed for a long moment of disbelief as an unerringly aimed flaming arrow pierced his heart and turned him to dust.

"You knew I'd kill you if you tried anything," Buffy said from the doorway.

Also, does Ripper count or is he a sub-set of Giles?

There are two Buffy/B7 crossover zines, one gen (that I didn't do) and one mixed (mine!) including, e.g., Joyce/Gan and Ethan/age-reverted!Avon.

I LOVE YOU SO HARD RIGHT NOW. VERY VERY VERY FREAKING HARD. This like the only genuine moment of mirth I've had all weekend.

I think Ripper counts as a subset of Giles.

Ethan and Avon is such an interesting idea. I imagine, at the end, the universe implodes, yes?

I suck at archiving, so if something is really short...

TWO TRIOS! NO WAITING!

“See, I told you we’d get sorted into Slytherin,” Warren smirked, pouring a shot of the Three Broomsticks’ bootleg Firewhiskey into his pumpkin juice. “Except for the Dark Lady over there, of course.”

“You know what they say about homophobia,” Andrew sighed. He’d always known he was one of Nature’s Hufflepuffs.

“’Suck my dick’?” Warren suggested. “Yes, gentleman…and Andrew…we are well on our way to nailing down the West Coast Death Eater franchise.”

“I don’t know,” Jonathan said. He stared at the poster tacked to the wall (it was for Alfred Witchcock’s ‘Firenze’). “They’re so sick of transfer students, they might not. And anyway, maybe we should take advantage of the whole change of setting to think about…you know…not being evil.”

“Awww, don’t worry, your precious Slayer isn’t here, she won’t see you casting Cruciatus.” Warren stood up. “Well, come on, there’s Evil to be done! Don’t stand there holding your mimbulus mimbletonia.” Jonathan looked mutinous, but followed nonetheless.

Andrew remained, staring into his butterbeer. A few minutes later, a heavyset Slytherin sat down next to him. “Hey, Yank! How do you like it so far?”

“It’s confusing,” Andrew said. “I mean, passwords and secret passages and wands and robes…”

Goyle put his hand on Andrew’s knee. “In my plan, we are robeless.”

Spoilers: AtS S4 Habeas Corpses/Calvary, Season 5
PG-13; Lindsey, Lilah, Eve; 8.100 words

Anyone else think that the Lindsey arc in S5 didn't make a whole lot
of sense? Turns out that's because this bit of story never got aired.

Doyle writes, "The original intent was for this to (mostly) mesh with
canon," and boy, mission accomplished. It doesn't just mesh, it's
like a missing ingredient that completes canon. Very neat.

Probably my favorite writer for minor character BtVS and AtS fics is [livejournal.com profile] deird1. I think the best, most breathtaking of her stories of that kind is probably this one, told from Andrew's point of view about his team of Slayers: http://deird1.livejournal.com/47164.html#cutid1 She also has a good one from the POV of Nancy from the Wish-verse http://deird1.livejournal.com/64501.html#cutid1, and one from the POV of a handicapped past slayer http://deird1.livejournal.com/218550.html#cutid1.
