1. I have had an awful migraine this week; the temperatures were in the 80s last week and now they're in the 20s. Weather changes are one of my migraine triggers. Also, I don't think Ubrelvy is as effective as Nurtec, but my insurance won't cover Nurtec anymore. I mostly feel okay today, though, so hopefully the migraine won't flair back up again and is actually gone.

Stranger Things
Steve/Eddie
This is a deliciously dark and fucked up story. No HEA here.

3. I'm a little more than 100 pages into Stranger Things fic sorted by kudos. Some more trivia:

There's been a teensy, tiny bit of Nancy/Steve sprinkled throughout, but the majority of the het is background Lucas/Max and or Mike/El with a major slash pairing, Chrissy/Eddie, and Steve/Nancy/Jonathan.

Once I hit about page 70, I started seeing a lot of alpha/beta/omega fic; they were very few and far between before that.

4. Somebody needs to make a Stranger Things vid to The Barenaked Ladies song "Grade 9."
lunabee34: (end of the world by crystalchain)
So, my World Lit 1 textbook went to a new edition, and a couple of the things I had been teaching are no longer present in this new edition. As is not uncommon, I had to pick something to replace those texts without actually studying them and preparing lessons on them because our syllabi are due at the very beginning of the semester.

I decided to replace Medea with Lysistrata to keep a female protagonist. I've never read Lysistrata, but I know the general plot--Greek women refuse to have sex with their husbands to stop the Peloponnesian War. I thought, this will be fun for the students; it'll be slightly raunchy and they'll have a good time with it.

I started reading it yesterday, and y'all. OMG! This is the most explicit translation. I mean, I'm sure it's much more in keeping with how Aristophanes actually wrote it, but it's so so so explicit. So much fuck and dildoes and we want dick and look at that old lady's pubes and I am going to die teaching this. Thank god I don't actually have any dual enrollment (high school) students in this class whose parents can kick up a fuss. LOL

I will teach this on Monday and then replace it with Sappho's poetry going forward. OMG

1. The move began today. Our friend Peter, a former colleague, has a trailer and is helping Josh move Tom. They just arrived at the TN apartment an hour ago. It doesn't feel real yet, but it will.

2. I think I mentioned that I had my antibodies checked and that I had gotten those lab results in; they are normal, so I'm not being accidentally glutened, yay! I also had a bone density scan, and today I found out I've got normal bone density, so no osteopenia/porosis.

3. Steddie rec:

Good Ol' Fashioned Sexuality Crisis during the Apocalypse by words_reign_here

OMG so wonderful. Stories like this are my catnip.

4. Your latest trivia re: Strangers Things fanfic:

I'm at page 68 of fanfic sorted by kudos, and I've only encountered three reader fics (which completely surprises me; I thought they'd be more prevalent).

Almost every fic on these 68 pages is Steve/Eddie. There's some Steve/Billy, some Mike/Will, some Nancy/Robin, and a fair amount of gen, but it's 85% Steve/Eddie, which really truly surprises me. Not complaining; just surprised.

Lots of Eddie is a vampire fic.

5. Plot Bunny:

There's a fair amount of Eddie is a ghost fic, but I would love to see a story modeled on that old YA book, The Ghosts of Departure Point, where both Eddie and Steve are ghosts. I keep being tempted to write it, but I'm not going to. I'd have to watch the series again because at this point I have no idea what's ubiquitous fanon and what actually happened in the show. LOL

The Complete Poems 1927-1979The Complete Poems 1927-1979 by Elizabeth Bishop

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I had only read Geography III before this and so didn't realize that Bishop is primarily a nature writer. Most of her poems contain beautiful nature imagery. There's a few clunkers in here, especially among the juvenalia, but overall a gorgeous and meaningful body of work.

Radical Hope: A Teaching ManifestoRadical Hope: A Teaching Manifesto by Kevin M. Gannon

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In many ways, this is a companion piece to Cate Denial's Pedagogy of Kindness. It argues for teaching in ways that cultivate hope in our students and in ourselves by foregrounding accessibility, engagement, and kindness in the way that Denial defines it.

1. I am still reading an ungodly amount of Stranger Things fic, and y'all it's so funny reading through the fandom sorted by kudos. I'm on page 23 now, and it's killing me how many of the writers for this fandom are clearly British. It's all boot and mum and maths. Like an overwhelming preponderance that is frankly bizarre by numbers. Also, the punctuation of dialogue is a crime against humanity. So much

"I am very metal." Said Eddie. "Why yes you are metal, my doe-eyed sweetheart." Replied Steve.

And this atrocious punctuation occurs in otherwise excellent stories--good, plotty, angsty, wonderful stories. I have learned to just let my eyes slide right over it and quell the urge to grab a red pen.

Everyone has doe eyes. So many pet names. LOL

2. Josh's dad has found an apartment. He's moving in on February 15. It doesn't feel real. There's still a lot to do to get him there.

Chronically Magickal: Navigating Chronic Illness with WitchcraftChronically Magickal: Navigating Chronic Illness with Witchcraft by Danielle Dionne

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This contains a lot of practical, hands-on information about what witchcraft actually looks like. Reading books that are more about the history or the cultural context didn't give me a good idea of what practicing witchcraft on a daily basis would actually look like, but this book is very helpful for envisioning that.

4. ETA: I talked to my parents earlier this week for the first time since Christmas; I called because it was my mom's birthday. It was awkward and stilted. I keep mourning that relationship, which makes me feel stupid, because I KNEW they were like this and thought those things, but hearing it said blatantly out loud made it different for some reason. Dylan called them for the first time this week as well and said they were very careful when talking with them like they realized they had to be.

1. Once AO3 comes back up, go read the amazing story [personal profile] corvidology wrote me for Christmas:

Never Get Drunk with a Baltian Trader
Star Trek AOS
Kirk & Bones & Spock gen
Hijinks and shenanigans

2. Turns out I'm more fucked up about my parents yelling us at us that we're all going to hell and that's my fault specifically for damning my children than I thought. When I first got back from Christmas, I was just so relieved to be here, and I felt very even-keeled. Now I wonder if I just felt numb for awhile because I am currently struggling with figuring out how I'm going to interact with them in the future and going over all the old existential questions their upbringing gave me and reading a truly unhealthy amount of Stranger Things fanfic in a way that is indicative I'm trying to bury/ignore my feelings. :(

3. Today I participated in the first day of a Symposium about Death and Dying with the junior and senior Respiratory Therapy cohort. Later in the semester I'll lead a writing workshop with these students that I've designed in collaboration with the RT faculty. It's an incredibly cool and necessary project because coping with death is almost always left out of the curriculum in other programs (discussing it isn't even an accreditation criterion OMG!), but it is so so heavy. I am sad and overwhelmed at listening to my colleagues talk about their experiences with losing patients over the course of their careers, so impressed with their courage, and grateful that we have people who are willing to do their jobs.

4. Hi hi!

Please rec me your fave Steve/Eddie Stranger Things fics. I want any and all of them, but I am especially interested in pining and misunderstandings (no matter how convoluted or unbelievable--yes, I know, I am the plague upon fandom) and angst and sadness before eventual happy endings. Also humor because I contain multitudes. <3

This is really informative and accessible, especially for people who know very little about witchcraft and Wicca. Mooney spends a lot of time contextualizing and defining terms. She also provides an excellent list of scholarly resources as well as resources from within the community for further understanding.

“The humans have completed their mission. They have returned to where they belong. They are not forgotten by EarthHome. What about Ship? Does EarthHome remember Ship? Will Ship be scrapped again? Will we? I find those outcomes unacceptable.”

I am deeply amused that the person who wrote for me also wrote a story about the bots gaining more agency. We were definitely on the same wavelength this Yuletide.

3. Christmas was a shit show. I had been deliberating over how to handle my parents' insanity, and I had decided that I wasn't going to keep my mouth shut and leave the room anymore. It's always us accommodating them, and I get more and more resentful every visit until I'm just seething by the end of it. Not pushing back on their bigotry or conspiracy theories or whatever it is feels like letting them win. So I did push back whereupon my parents treated me and the children to an incredible harangue about how we were all going to hell, how Biden is a pedophile, how black people and white people had no problems with each other until Obama the Great Divider came into office, how police violence isn't a problem because black people in Chicago shoot each other, a bunch of nasty stuff about gay and trans people. Fiona got really, really upset and cried although I'm not sure they realized she did. Dylan handled it very well; they continued to calmly and maturely disagree with my parents who looked and sounded deranged next to them. They handled it better than I did. I always turn into a child around them who can't articulate things the way I mean to. It sucks.

4. At least I don't have to be in the classroom again until the 8th. I'm not updating my classes until the 6th because I don't give one single shit. Ha!

5. Happy New Year, y'all. I'm still in the process of sending out cards, so if you haven't gotten one yet, look for them over the coming weeks.

1. Oh, it's like a million pounds off my chest. So earlier this semester, shortly after my Aunt Gail died of ovarian cancer, Dylan started experiencing abdominal pain and some other symptoms. They went to the urgent care, and y'all, I know our health care is totally fucked, but sometimes there are good people operating within it. The doctor did an ultrasound FOR FUCKING FREE! and saw that they had an ovarian cyst. The doc said they were pretty positive it was a cyst but that Dylan needed to follow up with their OBGYN to be sure. We did that today. We have to wait for the confirmation from whoever's going to read the ultrasound, but the tech said the cyst is gone. Hurray!

2. I got packages of wonderful gifts from [personal profile] executrix and [personal profile] sheafrotherdon. Thank you so much!!

3. I introduced Dylan to the first Die Hard movie and they didn't hate it. We're going to watch the fourth one at some point before they go back to school.

The Rise of Silas Lapham (Norton Critical Editions)The Rise of Silas Lapham by William Dean Howells

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Unlike McTeague, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It follows a nouveau riche family as they navigate the upper-crust of Boston society.

This is a Norton critical edition, so it includes ancillary material at the back--contemporaneous reviews, letters to and from Howells, literary criticism. What amuses me about the contemporaneous reviews is the broad range of responses to the novel, especially the pearl clutching that runs the gamut from dismissing Howells as a Jane Austenesque writer of comedies of manners to the most odious picture of human nature with no redeeming qualities (these cannot be simultaneously true). A few of these reviews compare realism to photography, suggesting that it can't be art because it hasn't been molded into something edifying.

All the ancillary material is written by men except one contemporaneous review. Boo!

I find the 19th century discussion of photography and whether it's actually art to be fascinating. Ouida was of the firm opinion that it is not art, and she was highly critical of photography, seeing it as a kind of lie. She also was very upset with the way that photography changed expectations for privacy and ownership of a person's image. She wrote an entire short story centered around the misuse of a photograph.

1. Yuletide is did! I am so relieved.

2. Colonoscopy went well with good results: no polyps. I also got the results of my antibody test, and they were normal. This means that I am not currently being accidentally glutened. Tom has been much more careful since the last big blow up, and I have been hiding my lunch meat, so clearly that's working.

3. Tumblr has come to the middle school. Fiona started telling me yesterday about how two of her friends are pan and one of them is aroace and several of them are therians. One of her therian friends identifies with an OC animatronic she made up for the Five Nights at Freddy's universe. Y'all, I had no words.

So, I went yesterday to have the initial consult for my first colonoscopy, and lo and behold, it's happening tomorrow. I mean, medical stuff never goes that fast. LOL So, I'm spending today in the misery of liquids only + prep. Not looking forward to being NPO until the afternoon tomorrow either. But I'm glad to be getting it over with.

Also, the gastro was appalled that I've had no management of my celiac since diagnosis so I'm getting a bone density scan in January, and he tested my antibody levels. If those are elevated, it means I'm getting glutened even if I don't feel bad. Of course, if they do come back elevated, I suspect a certain new housemate is responsible for that.

But the house sale is completely over and the money is in the bank! OMG! So now the relocation may begin.

1. I have developed a new illness. Two days ago, for the first time, I watched two Hallmark Christmas movies and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I laughed. I cried. My heart was warmed.
