Downton Abbey
I am annoyed with some of the choices they're making in this final season. First, so much of the show has been about Mary's love life; from just about the first episode, her romantic choices have been the backbone of the show. I think I feel cheated that the romance with the race car driver is so truncated. He just hasn't been around enough for me to give a damn about him, and I think after tonight we've only got two episodes left. It feels too rushed.
It's certainly in character for Daisy to be a shit about what looks to be a burgeoning romance between Mrs. Patmore and Mr. Mason, but boy is it tedious. She never learns or grows in character; she's just as immature now as she was on day one, and it's annoying. Why would she begrudge the two people she cares for most a bit of happiness?
Also super annoyed at the way the show is leeching the joy out of Carson and Mrs. Hughes. I feel like they took something dear and made fun of it. I guess the writers just didn't know what to do with a romance between older people and so decided to just turn the whole thing into a joke. So much DNW.
I still don't like Thomas but I am certainly feeling sorry for him. I hate that his willingness to help Andy learn to read is so misconstrued by Carson. At least Andy realizes he was being an ass and apologized. The last episode ended with Thomas weeping, and I really hope he doesn't do something terrible to himself.
I am so thrilled with Edith's romance and her female editor at the magazine. I'm hoping this agent guy is the one for her.
I was so certain Robert was going to die after that shocking scene in the dining room. When he said to Cora, "If this is it, know I have loved you very much," the whole room just busted out in tears. So glad he survived the ulcer rupturing. I've thought his death was being telegraphed this whole season, so super glad to be proved wrong. So proud of the way Robert has changed over the course of this show. He can get behind Mary as head of the estate; he can be proud of Edith's work on the magazine; he even says that he approves of her agent if she loves him no matter anything else about him.
The episode where the community comes to view the house was so enlightening. It's shocking to realize how little they know about the house they live in. Who's in that painting? Why's that coat of arms set into the bricks on the fireplace? Why was this constructed this way? You can see why a Regular Joe would be so resentful of people who live in luxury they've barely even examined (certainly not to a degree that they could truly be thankful for it) and waited on by people they don't recognize after they leave their employ. Not a good look for the Granthams.
I hope that this test the school master wants to set up for Molsley will be his ticket out of service. *crosses fingers* I so want a happy ending for him.
Gotham
Not gonna lie. I've been kinda bored this season. Zsasz has been a delight to watch. Penguin has been a delight to watch (Pax Penguina *snort*). Bruce has been a delight (especially while being an ass at the auction; that was the best scene of the season, hands down). Ngyma sending Penguin a message by rap, also a delight. But I'm not just feeling it as a whole.
Maybe it's because Selena has too much hair or because Barbara's wig is an abomination. Maybe it's the way Barbara's wardrobe seems to consist solely of suits buttoned at the navel with no shirt underneath. Or possibly, it's Jim instantly falling into bed with Don Falcone's daughter. IDK
I think that while there has been humor in these episodes, they're not reveling in the camp and humor in the way I have come to expect and love from this show; maybe that's what missing for me.
