Emma and I finished Dollhouse yesterday. OMG, wow. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
First off, I really don't get the criticism of any of the acting on the show, especially Eliza Dushku's. While Enver Gjokaj is clearly the powerhouse (his mimicry of Topher was amazingly good), I thought all the other actors did very well. I thought Eliza Dushku was great as Echo/Caroline; she didn't seem like the weakest link to me at all. I thought she carried the show very well.
I also don't get the criticism I keep seeing on meme that Dollhouse is super rapey and doesn't acknowledge it, like Joss is somehow this horrible rape reveler (which the hatred for Joss is another thing I find tiresome on meme). From the very first episode and all the way through to the end of the show, using the dolls for sexual fantasy is equated to rape and human trafficking; it's called out by so many characters along the way. The narrative never, ever treats it as okay. Ever. It's always one of the horrific aspects of the Dollhouse that Echo and the others are fighting against.
One of the things I really like about the show is the way that it takes characters who are essentially unlikable, terribly morally compromised and unethical, and somehow makes them sympathetic, makes you care about them. I think that's really good writing.
I loved the way DeWitt turns into this ruthless person in the second season, sending Echo and the others to the attic, only to realize that she's doing it to bring down Rossum and that Echo is in on the game. Loved that reveal! The scene right before DeWitt finds her courage, when she spends the day getting drunk and falling asleep and drooling on her desk, that was some amazing acting there.
The reveal I did not like is Boyd being the main bad guy all along. Emma and I felt as betrayed as Echo. :( It also doesn't make logical sense to me. I guess he said that the more imprints Echo cycles through the more her spinal fluid builds up the antibodies for the vaccine, so I guess letting her be a doll makes sense. I guess it also makes sense that he'd want to be nearby to protect his asset. But why actually befriend everyone, work with everyone against Rossum? And why have Whiskey kill Bennett? That part really didn't make sense to me. His last scenes seemed to indicate that Boyd was just crazy and really thought they could all be some kind of family, but he never hinted at that kind of instability before. Really didn't like that twist at all.
I really like the way the story was told with this future dystopia hanging over everything with all these little clues showing up in the present day narrative. Very cool way to tell the story.
Paul dying was so sad, and I can't tell if Echo uploading him is sad or not. I'm leaning toward sad. :( That scene where she loses her shit over Paul was so hard to watch.
I wonder if Alpha will actually be wiped or if he'll keep all his imprints.
DeWitt and Topher at the end were deeply sad to me.
Now it's time to go see if there's any good fic!
Downton Abbey watch continues.
Edith appears to be pregnant, and her boyfriend is AWOL. IDK how that's going to go.
Mary has just met a man she loathes and who loathes her back; clearly they're going to be romantically involved.
I'm so glad Daisy was able to swallow her hurt and wish Alfred luck at the Ritz. I don't like her being all spiteful.
Things are improving with Anna and Bates, thank goodness.
Now we'll have to see what comes of Rose canoodling with the black singer.
